Moving around the globe with my cameras!

travelGOING PLACES LOCALLY AND ABROAD is always my cup of tea. Having a Sagittarius zodiac sign, I am really destined to explore, conquer the globe and take pleasure (and learn) from it! Of course, taking images of these fascinating places is a must while I am travelling.

WHY (NOT) TRAVEL? If you have the necessary resources (time and money), you are physically and mentally fit, and you have proper supporting documents (i.e. passport, insurance, visa, etc.), what is the reason why you can not pack your bag and go?Italy

In my own personal experience during the past 17 years, I have been to several places, not only in my home beautiful country, but also to other fascinating destinations around the world. My travelling escapade is always driven by work and studying, including my passion in travel photography. Having involved in various development projects that provide solution to environmental problems, it does requires touring around the country or overseas. Also, my desire to further enhance my expertise in the field of my specialisation through postgraduate studies/trainings elsewhere serve as a stepping stone to visit different places. Thus, my numerous travels are the outcomes of the kind of jobs that I am involved with, as well as the rare opportunity to secure financial grants to study abroad.

Asturias SpainBeing in that particular situation on the right time and location, I will do my best to tour around the place and the neighbouring towns/cities. Honestly, being single and healthy, it is easy to do this, but if I have my own family and getting older, then travelling (abroad in particular) will not be in my top ‘must do’ list. Maybe some people will argue that anyone could still have a wonderful vacation even you have the family (and children), or during your retirement period. Well yes, however, the frequency and the duration will dramatically decrease. And there will be other issues relating to health condition that somewhat crucial in finalising travel plans which also affects the kind of activities you want to do during the travel.

travel3Moreover, most importantly it will also depend on where you are permanently residing or where your travel (point of origin) begins. For example, if I will live permanently in the Philippines, my travel to UK, Europe and the US will substantially diminish, but much more on local travels instead. Why, because my travel will be dependent on the affordability (i.e. mode of transport) and convenience (visa processing) to visit the place. Finally, however security or safety (because of political instability of the destination) is not a big issue to hinder my travel plan, unless there is a government restriction on that particular destination. I am not generalising it, but for British, American or Australian nationals are fortunate to travel without any stress of not having a visa elsewhere. Unlike us coming from developing countries, it is a must to undergo such strict issuances of a visa. Sometimes, I feel it is unfair for people who have the genuine intention of travelling overseas but denied for a visa for the reason of coming from countries that threaten their security/safety.

travel3So, the kind of travelling that I am looking forward to is absolutely different from other people wish to go or what they want to do during their travels.

What motivates me to travel? How about my choices where to go? What factors to be considered in those choices? What activities that I normally do during my escapades or things that fascinates me? And lastly, what souvenirs that I bring after my visits which will always remind me of my wonderful journey and the learning experience?St Joseph Oratory Montreal Canada

Motivation to travel. Watching films, reading travel magazines, and my hobby in photography motivate me to visit other places. Being a regular moviegoer, I am fascinated with the cinematography of the film which leads me to wonder where this location where been shoot. I will make sure that I stay in my seat while waiting for the full credits of the film which provide me the information of the location. travel3Travel magazines are also influential to pack my bag and explore the featured scenic attractions in the publication. And most importantly, because of my interest in photography, I always go out and have my vacation just to improve my photography skills by visiting these places featured in the magazines or in the films. To some extent, I am also motivated by the interesting stories from my close friends who were able to visit these places. Overall, I believe that through my travelling, I could experience and learn other cultures, languages, beliefs, history and to meet interesting people which I could not find in textbooks or not being taught inside the classroom.travel3

Choices where to go. The main factor that influences where to visit or spend my holiday is ‘relatives and friends’. It is because having them on these places, it will be easier for me to explore and enjoy my short stay -  a hassle-free and save money. In most cases, my accommodation is ‘free’ and I could do more things considering that my friends are hospitable enough to tour me around at their convenience. Aside from that, if they are not available, they will provide me the best itinerary – where to visit and what to expect from these attractions. Moreover, my choice is also affected by the affordability, accessibility, the mode of transport, and the convenience to get the visa. For example, if I will have to choice between Spain and Italy, I would probably choice Italy. Well both countries offer fascinating attractions, but I would rather choice Italy since it will be easier for me to secure the visa than Spain. Securing a Spanish visa requires a two-stage application: sending a request letter and the personal interview in Manchester. While the Italian visa application is done by posting the required travel documents, including the processing fee which takes 2-3 weeks.surfers paradise australiacrista

Activities to explore the place. As I said earlier, I want to learn and enjoy from my travel and I can only do this by visiting places that will probably satisfy this desire. Generally, I am interested to visit libraries, museums, castles, shopping malls, churches, historical structures, and of course watch live shows, festivals and musical productions; and visit resorts, casinos and beaches. I do research by visiting universities and check the possibilities of having future research with these institutions. Visiting theme parks that offer adventurous and thrilling rides is also in my list during my travel.Golden Bridge San Francisco

Souvenirs. Aside from shopping for clothes and personal accessories, I make sure that I have extra copies of postcards for each location/attractions that I have visited, which some of them will be sent to my family and friends. Also, I am interested to collect pins, key chains, posters and beer mats. Unfortunately, I don’t bring home some antiques and jewelleries which are subject to airport tax and duties. For some people, antiques and art crafts are their interests, but at the moment I don’t have the obsession to have them. This is because I don’t have a permanent place to store or display these pieces of art. The photographs taken during my trips will ultimately serve as mementos and a truly evidence of my escapades. I forgot to mention, I also buy 1-2 books during my travel.

To be continued…I’m on my way home now!

My first ever published literary and photographic works

•October 31, 2009 • 1 Comment

artisanTUP-MANILA, PHILIPPINES. I started by university life in 1982 at the Technological University of the Philippines (Manila campus). To have a balance academic life aside from being a university scholar (Techonology Resource Center Foundation under the former First Lady Imelda Marcos), I participated in various students activities, joining clubs and the school publication, The Philippine Artisan. From a staff writer then as a Literary/Feature Editor on my second year of appointment, it was a challenging task for me considering that I had difficulty in English writing during those early years of my life (well until now Im still struggling to write…hehehe).

EVEN THOUGH I had experience back in my high school years, being involved in a government university’s paper (aka school organ) was much tougher and the pressure was bigger considering that sometimes we could not write what we want to express on print! In other words, censorship existed along the way prior to publication.

Anyway, my first article was about my attendance in the National Techno Club Convention held in Tacloban City (also my first visit to Imelda’s hometown). The article was accompanied by my first ever photo of Madame Imelda and it was also my first ever image printed and circulated in my university in 1983! Looking at the angle of the shot, it seems that I already have the natural eye in photography and imaging… what do you think?

artisan1Techno Club was a nationwide program under Marcos regime that served as a potent arm for developing self-reliance among Filipinos with memberships of 1 million from communities, schools ( in all levels) in the 80s. Majority of the student members were scholars and I was one of them!

ON THE OTHER HAND, I LOVE TO WRITE POEMS… not much in English but in Tagalog (Filipino language). Again, two of my first poetic works were also published in The Philippine Artisan. One of them is featured here… looking back and thinking what was the motivation in writing this poem, I can only remembered that I was inspired to write these verses after watching Ate Vi’s (Santos, the Philippine actress) movie in 1983 entitled, Paano Ba Ang Mangarap? which currently serialized in the Philippines (GMA Channel 7).

Mangarap?

Paano mangarap ang dakilang dukha?
Wika nga nila’y isang kahig ’sang tuka
Sa masalimuot na sandaigdigan
Tanging anak-pawis nitong sambayanan.

Paano mangarap ang taong mayaman?
Lahat ng kailanga’y nasa paanan
Alahas, pera, damit, at mga pagkain
Samakatuwid walang alalahanin

Paano ba mangarap ang isang mangmang?
Di nakapag-aral nang mataas na antas
Upang iguhit sariling kapalaran
Ngayon, bukas, sa taun-taong daraan.

Paano mangarap ang may kapansanan?
Sa kanyang katawan, kanyang kaisipan
Kung tutuusin, walang silbing nilalang
Bagama’t sila’y bahagin ng lipunan

Paano ba mangarap ang mga ulila?
Walang nag-aalaga’t nag-aaruga
Maga ambisyon sa panaginip na lamang
Buong tatanggapin ang kahihinatnan

Laging nakikintal sa puso’t isipan …
Panahong nakalaan – ang kinabukasan
Ang mga  pangarap, maisakatuparan
Ang buong tagumpay nawa’y makakamtan!

LOOKING BACK 23 YEARS AGO, it seems that Ive gone too far – the way I express myself through writing. Being an engineer (having more fun of numbers), it is really difficult to articulate the things that Im thinking and putting them into writing. But, this is not a hindrance to continue my passion thru blogging and Im sure some of my readers will agree… I have soooo much things to share every day to everyone but sometimes with my present work and commitments Im struggling to post regularly. Well, what matters most is not the quantity of the posts but the QUALITY of information that Im sharing to my readers in my blogsite! This is also the reason why that this blogsite will be part of a bigger, better mother portal…

My world is getting smaller every day is changing… is having a major makeover and expect that bloggers like you will be part of it! Watch out for it … MY BLOGSPHERICAL WORLD OF LIVING… is coming soon before 2009 ends!

Rest in Peace: A glimpse of the resting place of the former Pres, Madame Cory Aquino

•October 29, 2009 • 2 Comments

MANILA MEMORIAL, 20 September 2009. Two reasons why I visited this biggest cemetery in Paranaque during my quick holiday in Manila. Firstly,  to have a proper  goodbye to my loving grandma, Lola Presing who passed away last year coz I did not able to attend the funeral. And secondly, to offer my respect to the late Cory Aquino who died in August 2009, few weeks prior to my visit. My grandma’s tomb is just few blocks away from the very simple mausoleum of Cory and Ninoy.

Historical Tweets for Pinoy Expats Blog Awards 2009

•October 21, 2009 • 7 Comments

IM SHARING MY OWN HISTORICAL TWEETS DIRECTLY FROM “THE THINKER”, the sculpture masterpiece of Auguste Rodin in 1880.  This is part of the ongoing nomination for the 2009 Pinoy Expats Blog Awards which this personal blog of mine is one of the nominees. The organiser, PEBA has successfully received the sponsorship of NOKIA thru Ovi.com. ovi logo

The website, Ovi.com allows members to have their own email accounts,  synchronise files from PC, including contacts, travel plans and calendars, or even share music and videos and access to numerous applications for videos and games. I also discovered thru Ovi’s blog that Nokia created a site called Green Explorer. According to Riitta Jantunen (author of the article, Keepin’ It Green), Green Explorer aims to “make a sustainable lifestyle easier for people.” She adds that it “is a sustainable lifestyle guide powered by Nokia, helping people to lead a greener lifestyle and discover the treasures around them. “

The website has information on local water quality, recycling practices and public transporation; interesting discussions on the sustainable lifestyle. Finally, the site also include the World Wildlife Fund projects and UNESCO World Heritage sites around the world where members could post/write and  share their travel experiences around these places.

historical-tweetsOn the other hand, Ovi also maintains journals thru Ovi Blog and Historial Tweets is being promoted. The Historical Tweets site encourages people to share their tweets or updates – a text-based posts of up to 140 characters in length as patterned in the popular social network, Twitter established in 2006.

Historical Tweets - The Thinker

Note: The photo was taken during my visit to Paris in September 2008. This plaster replica of “The Thinker” sculpture is found inside Musee d’Orsay. The  original one was held in Musee Rodin. More than 20 copies are displayed in museums around the world in varying scales.

UPDATES: Below is the revised version of my Historical Ovi Tweets for better resolution (perspective) of the image of The Thinker.

Spandau Ballet: A night to remember

•October 15, 2009 • 2 Comments

I WAS FORTUNATE TO BE INVITED TO ATTEND the much-awaited comeback concert of Spandau Ballet. After 20 years, the boy band visited again Belfast last nite (14 October) to entertain  their avid fans (including myself watching them live for the first time) since 80s. The concert kicked-off with their new songs from their latest album, “Once More” and top-chart songs such as “Through the Barricades” and “Gold”.  The lead singer, Tony Hadley still got the elegant and well dressed persona and the golden voice - having the maturity and emotion singing their old songs.

The crowd was singing along when the band sung “Through the Barricades” which quite meaningful to the people in Belfast depicting the situation during the troubles in the 80s. As usual, I brought my digital camera and capture some parts of the performances.  Everybody was dancing when the Spandau Ballet finally sung “Gold” at the end of the concert. I really enjoyed the night as I was also remembering those old times when I was still in university humming their ballad songs.

For details of the release of their album on the 19th October and future concert tours, click HERE.
