The Philippines is 2010 BBC World Challenge winner

I AM VERY HAPPY to share this good news especially for my kababayan! I took part in promoting this annual event organized by BBC (UK) thru Facebook by asking friends to vote for the finalists, including the Philippine entry, THE ONLY WAY IS UP – a project initiated by Alternative Indigenous Development Foundation Inc. (AIDFI).

As quoted from its website, “World Challenge is a global competition aimed at finding projects or small businesses from around the world that have shown enterprise and innovation at a grassroots level. World Challenge is brought to you by BBC World News and Newsweek, in association with Shell and is about championing and rewarding projects and businesses which really make a difference.”

In 2005, the Philippines also won the award for the project called, COCONETS FOR SOIL EROSION.The Coconets started in 1995 by Juboken Enterprise which help prevent soil erosion.  These nets are made from waste coconut husks – an eco-friendly solution, and it became popular for making different waste products such as doormats, stuffing for car seats and mattresses, and fertiliser (made from coconut dust) suitable for organic farms. This project also got a special award from the Philippine President in 2004.

Running in its 6 years, BBC World Challenge provides an effective medium to bring these remarkable community projects to the people around the world.
